April 1, Merging of Northern Ohio BSA Councils

April 1, For those interested in finding out more about the recent merger of the Northern Ohio BSA councils there’s little information available but there’s a “summit” planned for April 1 at the CVCC in Brecksville. It’s not clear what a “summit” is and there’s no agenda available yet. There’s a link at gccbsa.org “Integration” which takes you to this site which has the letter announcing the summit:

March 4, Merit Badge Midway,

The Merit Badge Midway is a chance to earn some of the elective badges that we don’t do as a troop or are not available at summer camp. Some of the elective and Eagle required badges that we do as a troop are also available if you want to accelerate your schedule.

I’ve seen scouts complete 9 badges at this event but completing 2-5 is more common. It works only if you complete the requirements before you show up and then take care of the “discuss with counselor” parts in a face-to-face at the midway. Many counselors prefer that you complete the worksheets that are available on the meritbadge.org web site (which also lists the requirements separately from the worksheets).

If you need some badges to complete your rank advancements requirements past 1st Class, this is a good opportunity to get some badges done in a short amount of time. meritbadge.org and your scout handbook will list the badges that are Eagle required.

There’s an online signup link in the Merit Badge Midway Flier

Troop and Order of the Arrow Elections this week.

This week,
We will have troop elections and Order of the Arrow elections this week.

For both of the elections, we need to have at least half of our active members voting.
For the troop: we elect Senior Patrol Leader who appoints one or more Assistant Senior Patrol Leaders (Both positions count toward Rank advancement)

Then the Patrols elect a Patrol Leader (counts toward rank advancement) who assigns an Assistant Patrol Leader (does not count toward rank advancement)

For the Order of the Arrow:
Eligibility requirements:
1. First Class or higher in rank.
2. After registration with a troop or team, have experienced fifteen days and nights of camping during the two-year period prior to the election. The 15 days and nights must include 6 consecutive days (including 5 nights of resident camping, approved and under the auspices and standards of the Boy Scouts of America. The balance of the camping must be overnight, weekend, or other short term camps.
3. Scoutmaster approval.
4. Registered with the BSA.
5. Under 21 years of age

The OA representatives will discuss this more fully but those elected must then complete a weekend campout of service (Ordeal) to complete the joining requirements.

There is a troop position available (OA Rep) which counts toward rank advancement.
